Christmas orders | strong leather dog collars

November 5, 2015 | Leave a reply

bruno the dog wrapped in fairy lights christmas

Cut-off for Christmas orders
Our production time is 4-6 weeks so in order to guarantee delivery before Christmas, and allow time for postage, you’ll need to get your orders in to us before midnight this Sunday (8 November 2015). This guarantee is for domestic customers only, it’s now too late for customers outside of Australia. Overseas customers can still order something between now and Christmas but it most likely won’t get to you in time to place it under the tree.

Christmas opening hours and gift vouchers
Ruthless Leather will be closed from 18th December 2015 until Monday 4th January 2016. During that time the email will be on auto-reply and there will be no one available to answer any questions or generate gift vouchers. If you wish to gift someone a voucher for Christmas we’ll need to receive your order before close of business (Sydney time) on Friday 18th December.

Summer holiday for Daveless
As Dave works 60-70 hour weeks year ’round we stop production over Christmas and through January in order for him to recharge. He’ll down tools on the 18th of December and won’t return to the workshop until the start of February 2016. While you can still access the website and place orders during that time, no work will be done until he returns from his break. You can still order from the Ready to Ship section (although the section above still applies) but any custom orders received after the start of December 2015 will not be completed until between mid-February and mid-March 2016.

The foster puppy was going to model for our Christmas photo, to give you a break from Bruno for at least one post, but he decided that running around in the rain and digging holes would be way more fun. He hasn’t quite worked out the value of cabasnossi like Bruno has!

ruthless leather martingale collar with buckle

ruthless leather martingale collar with buckle

We often get asked which type of collar is best for a dog that pulls on the lead. While our leather martingale collars with buckles are fantastic training aids, they won’t miraculously stop your dog from pulling, particularly if it’s a behaviour that is already quite ingrained in your dog. We recommend that you book a session with a reputable balanced trainer in your area for help with loose leash walking in conjunction with our martingale collars.

Here are some important facts about these collars:

– To be worn ONLY during training/walks
– When sized correctly, dog cannot back out of this collar
– Proper placement is high and snug, at the jaw and behind ears (as pictured)
– Allow for leash corrections
– Stop use if dog is pulling and choking (gasping for air/gagging/coughing)
– Never use when dog is tied out/tethered

Our martingale collars can be made with chains and without.

What exactly is “genuine leather”?

August 30, 2015 | Leave a reply

ruthlessleather-LR-8569

All of our products are handcrafted from high-quality bridle leather. That’s why you’ll never see us refer to our goods as “genuine leather”.

Genuine leather doesn’t just mean that the product is made of real leather (which it is), but it also means it is the lowest quality of all products made out of real leather.

Genuine leather generally doesn’t last as long or look as nice as higher-quality leather. You’ll typically find it in belts and shoes from lower-priced chain stores and bags or other goods in the lower-leather price range.

Goods marked as genuine leather will be several layers of low quality leather bonded together with glue and then painted to look like a better-quality leather. It’s what is left over when the other, higher grades are stripped away.

This grade of leather is acceptable if you’re just buying something cheaply and don’t care too much about its quality. It won’t last very long and, if you care about your dog’s safety, products made from it should be avoided.

Ruthless Photos and Ruthless Leather have been long time supporters of Arctic Breed Rescue here in Sydney. They recently took on a dog that needs costly specialist help to get to the root of his skin condition. We’ve donated a collar and lead that they’re raffling off for just $10 a ticket. Please support them if you can. You have a 1 in 100 chance of winning.

Full details are on their Facebook page here.

the reveal | strong leather dog collars

March 23, 2015 | Leave a reply

ruthlessleather_revealed

It’s finally here. The day a lot of you have been waiting for and the day I thought would never come. It’s been a long and somewhat stressful journey, to say the least, so I hope you all agree that using our new website is a much more enjoyable experience than our previous one. (It also matches my photography website which pleases my OCD no end, let me tell you!)

Why did you keep us waiting all this time?
Ruthless Leather is just two people, Dave and I. Dave hand-makes all of your orders from start to finish. He’s also a cabinetmaker and he damaged his rotator cuff on a job back in June of last year. It’s taken months of osteopathy and acupuncture and rest for it to heal. You may ask why we don’t employ someone to help and the fact of the matter is we’ve tried but we just can’t find anyone as good as Dave. Everyone tells us we should send our designs to Asia and have them mass produced, but we’re vehemently opposed to that idea. Our reputation has been built on the amazing quality of Dave’s work (and my super fantastic designs) so while it might take a little bit longer to turn around your orders, especially as we grow more popular, every piece that we create is bespoke and first class … and worth the wait!

What’s new?
Pretty much everything, but I’ll try to condense it into a bulleted list for you:

  • GST is now included on the prices that are displayed, not added to your cart at the end.
  • Prices on the majority of our products have remained unchanged (although with the GST now included they may appear to have increased). The only products that have gone up are our training collars – they’re now the same price as the flat collar version of the equivalent design – as we’ve come to realise that they take as long (if not longer) to make. Some of our matching leads have also gone up, again, due to the extra time and materials involved.
  • One of the biggest improvements to the site is the addition of add-ons to each product page, so you can add your nameplate, bling, etc. right there on the same page without having to go and look for them.
  • The product images are bigger and more detailed … mostly. Some still need to be updated. More about that later.
  • If you’ve bought something from us before you can add a review (glowing preferably) on the product page for that item.
  • You can now pay by bank transfer or credit card.
  • Shipping is calculated by weight and destination.
  • We have a new ready to ship section where everything is discounted.
  • The Ruthless Leather and Ruthless Photos blog used to be combined, but now it has it’s own home right here and you can subscribe to it by email.
  • There’s a huge gallery of photos of dogs wearing our wares.
  • There’s also a lengthy page of testimonials from our happy clients.

Will there be a relaunch special?
Why yes, yes there will. It’s a little self-serving, but hey, a discount is a discount! Dave was none too keen to make me seventy million new samples just so I could re-photograph them for the new website (and now that I’ve compiled the list, I don’t really blame him) so we came to a compromise – we’re offering a 15% discount on the following items as an incentive for you to order the things I need to photograph. If what you want is listed below you can email me for a voucher code. There’s only one code for each item and it will only be valid for a week, so you’ll need to use it asap. You may request more than one code if you wish to buy multiple items on the list.

Narrow training collars:
The No Frills (t) (n) – black and brass
The Bubbler (t) (n) – burgundy and silver

Regular training collars:
The Stud Muffin (t) (r) – brown and aged brass
The Decoder (t) (r) – burgundy and aged brass
The Lone Rocker (t) (r) – chestnut and silver
The Nautilus (t) – chestnut

Wide training collars:
The Lone Ranger (t) (w) – brown and aged brass
The Trixiedog (t) – chestnut and black and brass
The Urban Cowboy (t) (w) – brown and silver and blue
The Asteroid Belt (t) (w) – brown and brass
The Stud Muffin (t) (w) – chestnut and silver

What about flat collars??
If you wish to purchase any of our listings that have a recycled photo from the old website (on the wooden table with a white wall behind it) you can email me for a 10% off voucher code. You’ll need to order the same colour leather and hardware as the collar in the current listing though (we may be flexible on certain items) and the neck size needs to be average for that design, not huge or tiny. In some cases we may have already made and photographed a collar but not added it to the website yet, so best check if this is the case before asking for a voucher code.

Coming soon
Very soon we’ll be wholesaling our No Frills line of collars and leads. If you’re interested in selling these, our most popular product, to your clients please email us for more details. We hope to be launching some new designs this year also, so keep your eyes peeled for them.

I want my order and I want it nowwww!
We’re so appreciative of the fact that many of you have waited a very long time for us to reopen and Dave will be working hard to get all your hand-made goods out to you as quickly as possible, but in the event that we’re absolutely slammed with orders can I please ask that you bear with us while he makes his way through them all.

Without any more waffling on, we welcome you to OUR NEW WEBSITE! If you see any typos, or find anything that doesn’t work, please let me know.

Cheers,
Ruth [+ Dave + Angel + Chopper + Trixie + Bruno]

This has been a long time coming … a dedicated Ruthless Leather blog! No more sharing with Ruthless Photos. I was going to transfer all the old blog posts over here but then I remembered they’re all 200px smaller in width since the Ruthless Photos blog redesign and I’d need to resave all the images. So yeah, nah! You can still read them all here though, if you’re so inclined.

And because blog posts are much more pleasing to the eye with a photo, here’s Ody the French Bulldog wearing the first ever RocknRolla made with coloured decorations. He’s doing some sterling test driving for us.
